The advent of Māori radio was the result of a claim to the Waitangi Tribunal in 1986 concerning the allocation of radio frequencies. There are now 21 Māori radio stations throughout the country.

- Ruia Mai
is a national Māori langauge radio news service networked to iwi stations. It can also be listened to in Auckland on 1179AM.
