The Māori Language Commission is always being asked for Māori place names. We have provided this map with some of the more commonly used place names.

Please note that this is not an exhaustive list of Māori place names. It is a guide and a beginning. Click here for another list place names (some of which are shown here). Please let us know of any Māori place names that you are accustomed to using.

The Reed Dictionary of Māori Place Names is another useful resource you may like to consult.

Sometimes, the best and easiest way to find a Māori place name for a particular area is to visit a local marae and/or ask local iwi.
